There’s no doubt that these two teams combine to give us the biggest game in Major League Soccer this weekend. It’s first versus third in the Eastern Conference as Toronto host NYCFC in a match that will have some bearing on the final standings at the very end of the campaign.
It’s a close one to call this Sunday night with home advantage potentially giving the Canadian side the edge – at least according to the bookies.
Anyone looking to back Toronto to take the points can currently get a best price of 17/20 with either Winner Sports or MarathonBet. Meanwhile, the odds on a tie are out at 3/1 with Bet365 while New York City are at 10/3 with 32Red.
Those figures may come as a surprise when you consider their close proximity in the Eastern Conference Table and a win for NYC could even be enough to take them to the top. Patrick Viera’s men are getting a lot of interest as the outside punt here but before we give our verdict, let’s have a look at the men who could decide this contest.
Individual Goal Scorers
The first goal scorer betting shows a pair of likely suspects with Toronto’s dangerous strike force leading the way. Sebastian Giovinco is the marginal favourite to find the net first at best odds of 4/1 with Bet365 while his partner Jozy Altidore is just behind at a top price of 9/2 with Bet365 once again.
Of the two, Giovinco has 12 goals this season from 19 MLS games and therefore seems the most obvious choice while Altidore has nine in the same number of matches. The anytime market might just be a better option for Altidore where he can be picked up at a top price of 13/10 with Betway.
New York City FC get their first mention with Spanish international David Villa at best odds of 5/1 with Betway. Villa has been prolific since transferring to the US and with 10 goals in 16 MLS matches already this season, the veteran is the most obvious goal threat for the visitors this weekend.
There are other options for this market but it really is hard to ignore Villa’s credentials. Based on the fact that Toronto are clear favourites for the game, we’re siding with Giovinco for the first goal but we have to consider David Villa for a goal in 90 minutes which is quoted at a decent best of 17/10 with Betway.
Other Side Bets
The league standings suggest we may get a much tighter game than the market suggests but can we expect goals? Neither team is particularly shy in front of the target but both average less than two goals a game.
Interestingly, at the other end of the pitch, the goals against column suggests that neither defence is exactly watertight. As Toronto and New York City FC are both conceding more than a goal every game, we would look at Both Teams to Score which is on offer at a top price of 8/13 with Bet365.
As for the match result, we just feel that the odds setters may have got this wrong and that two strong teams are going to cancel each other out on Sunday. The tie is our tip while there are lots of side bets on offer. We’ll finish with two tips in the goal scoring markets but you may also want to consider a correct score of 1-1 at 15/2 or 2-2 at 14/1 with both of those industry best prices being quoted by William Hill.
- The tie at 3/1 with Bet365
- Sebastian Giovinco to score the first goal at 4/1 with Bet365
- David Villa to score anytime at 17/10 with Betway
