We’re only just getting over the drama of the 2020 Super Bowl but already, football franchises are starting to make plans for the new NFL season. We’re just a few weeks away from the 85th NFL draft when teams will be adding the best that college football has to offer to their existing rosters.

There is a betting market attached to the NFL draft and it relates to which players will form part of the first and second picks. Not every sportsbook embraces it but there can be some value here so let’s get on and consider some prices for 2020.

Dates for your Diary

Firstly, let’s make sure you gave the right dates for this year’s draft. The markets are open now and you have a few weeks left in which to get involved but you do not want to miss the cut off date. The draft weekend begins on Thursday, April 23rd and it will conclude two days later on Sunday 25th.

The best talent from the colleges will be on the table and a busy three days of trading are guaranteed. In terms of our betting preview, it’s all about those initial picks. The honour of drafting the first new player will fall this year to the Cincinnati Bengals but who is in their sights?

First Up

The sportsbooks who have published markets for the draft are united in their approach to the first pick. Joe Burrow is the man in question and the bookmakers are so convinced about his credentials that the best odds we could find were the 1.03 from Bet365.

Burrow, therefore, looks a certainty to become the first pick of 2020 and those thoughts are backed up by the media. A 23-year-old quarterback from Ames, Iowa, Burrow came from Ohio State before spending a season at LSU which proved to be especially productive.

Behind our market leader, there is a significant gap to the joint-second favourite Chase Young who is out at 17.00 with 888Sport. Moving through the list, Tua Tagovailoa can also be claimed at 17.00 with Bet365 while Justin Herbert is quoted at 51.00 with 888Sport. It would be a huge shock for anyone to deliver the profit at 51.00 or longer so we’re looking at the top three names at best.

Far from Second Best

The second available market relates to the second pick in the 2020 NFL draft and you will have already anticipated the names who will feature at the top of the betting.

Joe Burrow will be some way down the list and that would leave a straight battle between Chase Young and Tua Tagovailoa. Unlike the previous market, you could find some value here with prices expected to come in at around the 5.00 mark. Our preference is for Chase Young – a defensive end who played on the same Ohio State team as Joe Burrow.

Young enjoyed plenty of success at the college level and claimed a number of individual awards so we expect he’ll be the second pick at the end of April.

We’re finding it impossible to argue with the sportsbooks here and if you need any further confirmation, just take a look at the awards claimed by Joe Burrow in 2019. As well as becoming a national champion, the QB accepted no fewer than 11 personal accolades including the Heisman Trophy, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Walter Camp Award.

This isn’t the boldest tip we’ve ever made but it may be one of the safest. For increased value, Chase Young would be a solid bet for the second pick as and when that market becomes available.

Best Bets:

Joe Burrow to be the first pick of the 2020 NFL Draft at 1.03 with Bet365.
