Who’s excited for this all-Canadian, all-Pacific Division affair then? Viewers could be treated to a fiery affair at Rogers Place this weekend – choosing a winner is not straightforward by any means. This one could go right down to the wire…
Edmonton are fourth in the Pacific Division but the Oilers won’t be getting too excited about claiming top spot. The hosts find themselves 16 points adrift of early pacesetters Calgary at the top of the divisional standings; pride and defending home ice is vital here.
The Oilers have a -12 goals differential but it would be foolish to read too much into that. In the last few weeks, Edmonton have started to string a run of results together and the hosts head into this one off the back of successive victories.
Meanwhile, Calgary are flying high at the top of the Pacific Division. The Flames have been on another level this year and plenty of punters will fancy Calgary to go close in their pursuit of the Stanley Cup. With 888sport offering 12/1, the Canadian side are right in the mix.
The Flames have a 30-13 win-loss record, with another five overtime defeats. Calgary tick all the right boxes to enjoy a successful campaign and it would be foolish to write the Pacific leaders off just yet. There is still lots of ice hockey to be played but Calgary are primed.
Oilers Still In The Playoff Mix
Write Edmonton off at your peril. Plenty of ice hockey fans will be looking elsewhere in the playoff race but the Oilers are still in with a decent chance of featuring in the postseason. A win here could give Edmonton the impetus needed to challenge.
When you have Connor McDavid on the roster, anything is possible. Arguably the top star in the National Hockey league, McDavid has carried Edmonton time and time again. He is now up to 70 points through 46 games this year; an impressive return to say the least.
McDavid gives the Oilers a chance of beating anybody and his presence may be enough to swing punters in favour of Edmonton. With the Flames playing on Friday night as well, the road team could head into this one mentally drained and McDavid may prosper.
Flames Fending Off Rivals At Pacific Summit
Calgary are top of the Pacific Division – and deservedly so. The Flames have been superb so far in 2018/19 and Canadian fans will be expecting big things in the coming months. Who knows, a serious run at the Stanley Cup could be on the cards.
The road team will almost certainly be tired after back-to-back away games and that will play into Edmonton’s hands. However, Calgary are the more talented, rounded team and we could see quality prevail on Saturday night. This one is evenly-poised…
Johnny Gaudreau is to Calgary what Connor McDavid is to Edmonton. He is the one player who stands out above his peers – he can be Calgary’s difference maker here. With 71 points in 48 appearances this season, Gaudreau is carrying the Flames to the summit of the NHL.
Predicting a winner is difficult and that’s why our main tip is for over 5.5 goals. Calgary are the more organised and talented team but a run of road games may hit them hard. Fatigue could come into it if this one is close heading into the third period.
It really could go either way but home advantage may tip the scales in Edmonton’s favour. A fiery affair is expected and the Oilers may have the energy and enthusiasm to claim a huge win on Saturday night.
TIP: Over 5.5 goals
CORRECT SCORE: Edmonton Oilers 4-2 Calgary Flames
